Gambia Register Heaviest Defeat

Wednesday, July 4, 2007

The Gambia U-20 team, last night, registered their heaviest defeat in an official competition by loosing 3-0 to the Golden Boys of Mexico.

The game which marked the country first appearance game in the World Youth Championship was played at the Toronto Stadium.

The Darling Scorpions were dominated from all parts of the game by the South American and current World U-17 champions.

Three second half goals were enough for the South Americans to start their campaign in the championship against a disappointing Gambian team.

The best player of the last FIFA U-17 championship held in Peru in 2005, Giovanni Dos Santos, set the Mexicans ahead in the 57th minute of the game with a powerful shoot, which surprised Gambian goalkeeper Joseph Gomez alias Nding.

The South Americans put more pressure on the Gambian team resulting to their second goal through Hector Moreno in the 67th, who capitalized on a scramble in the Gambian defense.

The Gambian team could not react to the situation and one minute before the final whistle Hernandez dashed all hopes for the Darling Scorpions by scoring the third for Mexico on a counter -attack.

The Gambia has two more games to play on Thursday July 5th against New Zealand and on Sunday July 8th against Portugal.

They need to win all games if they want to remain in Canada otherwise they would pack up on Monday July 9th, 2007 and head to Banjul.
